general: the modules tarball is now also packed as SQUASHFS file.; modules are loaded automatically during boot with hwdetect or if named in /etc/modules; in cases hardware autodetection fails.; Currently it raises startup time and modules.tgz is kept for a while as fallback, though it's deprecated.
